Saturday, March 21 The Soroptomist Club of Davis hosted Casino Royale, a benefit fundraiser for the Yolo County Crisis Nursery. Rotaract provided blackjack dealers and we had a great time getting to know Soroptomist members and members of the community who were in attendance. The evening was an absolute blast and Mandell Davis even sported a green visor, black bow-tie and festive belt. Kim showed off her flare which included a “Fun Meter” button and various Rotaract pins. Mike was very swank in his business suit and Agneiszka was charming as always.
Casino Royale was famous for it Rotaract blackjack dealers!
Published March 23, 2009 Community Service 1 CommentOn Friday afternoon, Feb. 20th, Rotaract fostered (just for the evening) four dogs to prep them for adoption at the Farmer’s Market. We picked them up from the shelter in Woodland, walked them in the park, bathed them, and watched a movie with them (Pride and Prejudice!). The dogs (terriers and one chiwawa) are from Dog Spot Rescue, an organization that saves dogs and puppies from abandonment, euthanization at shelters, and neglect from overwhelmed owners. If we do this again, we will take only 2-3 dogs and accept only females (no humping or marking territory!). It was certainly a night of service!!
In celebration of her heritage and for the love of her country Kylie, International Service Chair, hosted an Australia Day BBQ this past Sunday. Shrimp and snags (sausages) were thrown on the barbie, vegemite sandwiches were on offer, and a taste of kangaroo was offered up (seriously!) alongside some Fosters and some very decent Australian wine. The holiday was interesting to most native Americans, as while they celebrate their national holiday on the day they kicked the British out, Australia celebrates the day they arrived! Kylie was forgiven for this however as the night wound up with a viewing of the Australian film, The Castle, and an education in dry Australian humour. Happy Australia Day to all!
Big “Night 2009″ was another huge success. The evening was really amazing and the acceptance speeches from the five recipients were very touching. Rotary really appreciated our help with registering guests and with alcohol and photo sales. Kim had a great time helping Brian Otis (Marketing, UCD Athletics) with the live auction. After dinner, the program and the auction, the four girls got down with our bad selves on the dance floor (Agnieszka, Kylie, Akiko, Kim)! Once Marisa Schaffer (co-chair of BIG Night) sends out the final report of the funds raised, Dave Cruz (chair of Club Development for Rotary) will send this information out to everyone. Please see the photos below for Rotaracters in action!
For those Rotaracters who could not make it, sorry to have missed you at the event.

ROTARY BIG NIGHT Gala and Auction – Jan 17th, 2009
Published December 31, 2008 Community Service , Rotary Events Leave a CommentThis is the first reminder for Rotary BIG Night held Saturday, January 17th at the Sterling Hotel on 1300 H St in Sacramento. (http://sterlinghotelsacramento.com/). This is an annual fundraiser that serves the Child Abuse Prevention Program (CAPP) and last year raised $30,000 in one night – it’s a BIG Night! Rotary needs our help once again in helping set up the silent auction items, registering guests, delivering prizes to winners and running transactions. Please RSVP to Jeff Ying, jmying@ucdavis.edu by Monday, January 5th to let him know that you will be helping out. All volunteers receive a complimentary dinner and get to listen to the CAPP evening program and live auction. Please arrive at the hotel by 4pm and plan on staying until 11pm.
Downtown Tree Lighting Ceremony a delight for all
Published December 12, 2008 Community Service Leave a CommentThanks to all of the folks who came out on December 4th to watch the downtown tree lighting ceremony. Our efforts were well worth it! Christmas spirit abounded that night as elementary school kids (including Danny Tomesllo’s 8 yr, Madelline) and the DHS Madrigal choir sang throughout the night. Appearances made by Santa and his helper elves along with city council members. Look for the Rotaract decorated bulbs on two of the lower hanging branches!
Let’s get together for a fun Sunday afternoon (4-7pm) filled with great food and great people. Holiday Potluck (plan for ~10 ppl):
A-F Holiday Desserts/Drinks
G-R Holiday Side Dish (Pasta/Rice Dish)
S-Z Holiday Appetizer/Drinks
Look for recipes that call for seasonal ingredients. Buy drinks in bulk if possible, or make your own concoction. Think ahead and make something for everyone to enjoy or delay till the last minute and buy something at the store! We don’t mind as long as it’s good (jk) and it uses reusable/recyclable containers and/or minimal packaging.
Sustainable Gift Exchange:
Someone’s trash is another’s treasure. If you have a book, clothing, or some trinket that you have enjoyed and would like to pass along to extend it’s life, please wrap it (in a reusable bag or newspaper ads, of course) and add it to our gift exchange. These gifts can be real/senitmental or funny/white elephant.
Help plant with TREE Davis this Saturday from 1-4 pm. Location TBA – email Ag for details
